Research consensus panels (RCPs) and research summits are held four times per year to discuss critical research areas in IR and determine how the priority topic can be further developed.

Research ideas are collected from membership, corporate partners and the SIR Clinical Specialty Councils as potential meeting topics. With the guidance of the SIR Foundation leadership, SIR and SIR Foundation division councilors choose a topic and a lead investigator with expertise in the selected topic. The lead investigator coordinates a panel of multidisciplinary subject matter experts. If the panel contains industry representatives, the meeting will be organized as a research summit.

Each panelist presents a specific subtopic and discusses future research needs. The panel determines two to three top clinical research priority topics that may be developed into a clinical research project. Prioritization will be dependent on the level of innovation and its potential importance to clinical practice and overall global healthcare. Representatives from academia, industry and federal agencies may be invited as audience members to contribute to the discussion.

After the meeting, the lead investigator is encouraged to submit a paper to the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (JVIR). After submission to JVIR, SIR Foundation will release a Request for Proposal (RPFP) based on the priorities of each RCP. See more information about  current and past RFPs.

It is also recommended that an application is submitted for the Incubator Grant, which provides support for related project development costs.
