About SIR
Envisioning healing together
We are the voice for interventional radiologists (IRs) and advocate for them at the national and international level.
The Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) is a nonprofit professional medical society representing over 8,000 practicing interventional radiology physicians, trainees, medical students, scientists and clinical associates. SIR’s members range from medical students and residents to university faculty and private practice physicians.
Our mission
The mission of the Society of Interventional Radiology is to improve lives through image-guided therapy.
The SIR Foundation is dedicated to fostering research in interventional radiology, advancing scientific knowledge, increasing the number of skilled investigators, and developing innovative therapies that lead to improved patient care and quality of life. The Foundation supports innovation through the development and enhancement of minimally invasive image-guided therapies.
Diversity, equity, inclusivity
The success of our specialty is grounded in the clinical expertise of our members and is fortified and expanded by the diversity of their backgrounds and experiences. An innovative, competitive IR workforce requires more than medical competency but also innate, authentic human connections. The diversity of our membership is vital to the overall wellbeing of our specialty and the patients we serve.
SIR values a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). While not encompassing, our definition of diversity includes the race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, physical and mental ability, socioeconomic status, religious belief, or nationality.
Our commitment
- We are the voice for IRs and advocate for them at the national and international level.
- We support all members in their preferred model of IR practice at every stage of their careers through tools and education that ultimately benefit patients.
- We recruit and develop the best and brightest talent from all backgrounds to advance the specialty within clinical medicine and to better represent the patient population IRs serve.
- We commit to antiracist and antisexist efforts, policies and programs that aim to increase the numbers of underrepresented minorities and women within our specialty.
- We promote a culture of inclusion in all aspects of the society’s programs, policies, communications and services.
